PURPOSE & INTEGRITY AT WORK:
The Foundation of Lasting Fulfillment
By Keisha Hargett
The Next Chapter, Vol. IX, Issue 2 Summer 2025
We often measure success by promotions, deadlines
met, or the size of our to-do list. While those accomplish
ments matter, they don’t always bring the deeper sense
of fulfillment many of us are looking for.
That’s where purpose and integrity at work come in.
WHY PURPOSE MATTERS
When your work aligns with your values, it gives meaning to even the most routine tasks. Pur
pose provides a personal “why” behind the “what” of your daily responsibilities. It’s not just
about doing your job—it’s about knowing that your work contributes to something larger than
yourself.
This isn’t just theory—studies show it makes a measurable difference. A recent Forbes Hu
man Resources Council article reported that 82% of employees say an organization’s
purpose is important, and 70% feel their work defines their sense of purpose. In other
words, when people understand the why behind what they do, engagement and performance
rise dramatically (Forbes, 2023).
THE ROLE OF INTEGRITY
Integrity is the thread that ties purpose to action. It means approaching your role with honesty,
consistency, and care—even under pressure. Integrity creates trust: with coworkers, with lead
ership, and within yourself. When integrity is present, success feels earned and fulfilling.
SIGNS OF IMBALANCE
When purpose and integrity fall out of balance, work can feel draining rather than rewarding.
Some warning signs include:
-Feeling disconnected from the “why” behind your role
-Losing motivation or inspiration in daily tasks
-Compromising values to meet deadlines or expectations
-Struggling to take pride in your contributions
Left unaddressed, this imbalance can lead to burnout, stress, or the sense that success feels
hollow—even when achievements keep stacking up.
Leadership culture expert Jennifer Moss points out that while 70% of employees find purpose through work, about one-third are dissatisfied. She suggests leaders can close this
gap by operationalizing hope, simplifying workflows, and recognizing employees not just for
results, but for effort, creativity, and character (Investors.com, 2024).
FINDING FULFILLMENT
Real fulfillment comes when we balance achievement with alignment.
Ask yourself:
How does my work reflect my personal values and strengths?
What legacy or impact do I hope to leave through my contributions?
Do I feel proud of how I show up in my role each day?
By pausing to reflect on these questions, you can begin to realign your work with your sense
of purpose.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Success can be measured in numbers and outcomes—but fulfillment requires something
more. When you ground your work in purpose and integrity, you build not just a career, but a
meaningful path forward.
